Cherry Season & Their Health Benefits

Cherry season is upon us and let me tell you I am HAPPY! Well you should be too. Cherries are not only amazingly delicious fruit, but their health benefits are amazing as well. Cherries are in season during the end of spring and beginning to middle of summer, depending on the weather. They are in the stone fruit family, which most stone fruit are best in late summer beginning of fall like plums, nectarines, and peaches.

Let's get back to why they should be in your diet right now!

1. Cherries can help you sleep. The fruit contains melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone in our body. By regulating your sleep pattern you allow for overall better rest, which quality of sleep is essential for optimal health.

2. Reduce inflammation and help to alleviate achy joints. Cherries contain antioxidants, and antioxidants contribute to many health benefitting functions in the body. Specifically cherries like grapes contain a specific antioxidant called anthocyanin's that help to inhibit inflammatory enzymes in the body. If you suffer from chronic pain, or regular daily pains like from a workout, cherries can help to aid in recovery from the pain or reduce the overall sensation of the internal inflammation. Regularly consuming cherries during their season can help to reduce your aches and pains.

3. Help in shrinking your waist line. Summer is basically already here that means bathing suit season is upon us. Many freak out because a bathing suit means showing your belly. Don't fret mother nature has a funny way of working. Cherries can help to reduce belly fat when paired with a balanced portion controlled diet. By regularly eating cherries the antioxidant, anthocyanin (the same as above) can help to fight fat cells in the body. This means when part of a balanced diet of quality protein, healthy fats, and whole grains, cherries can reduce the bodies ability to store fat.

So what are you waiting for? Stop by your local market or farmers market and pick up some cherries to enjoy!
